ARCA Press Release

Appliance Recycling Centers of America Joins North American Climate Change Effort
January 21, 2008
Minneapolis, MN

Appliance Recycling Centers of America, Inc., (Nasdaq: ARCI), a forerunner in the appliance recycling business, has become a Founding Reporter of The Climate Registry. ARCA joins fifty-four corporations, thirty-nine U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, three Native American tribes, two Mexican states and the District of Columbia as the founders of the organization.

Over the past 31 years, ARCA has recycled well over two million major household appliances in the United States and Canada for 47 small, medium and large sized electric utility companies. These utilities have found that getting older, inefficient refrigerators and freezers out of their customers' basements and garages and off the electric grid has achieved significant energy savings, thereby reducing consumption and helping delay or prevent the need to build new power plants.
The U.S. EPA is now actively promoting this approach through its new Responsible Appliance Program.

"ARCA is committed to the goals of utility companies, governing agencies and consumers in reducing emissions of greenhouse-gases (GHG). Our participation in TCR puts us at the forefront of newly developing business practices needed for reporting, managing and reducing GHGs, and that is what our electric-utility clients are focusing on now," said Edward R. (Jack) Cameron, president and CEO.

“ARCA has demonstrated exemplary environmental leadership by courageously stepping forward to support The Climate Registry in its preliminary stages. We are deeply grateful for their integral support in helping to address the challenge of climate change,” said Gina McCarthy, Chair of The Climate Registry.

About ARCA

ARCA is one of the largest recyclers in North America of major household appliances for the residential energy conservation programs of electric utility companies. ARCA currently operates recycling centers in Minnesota, California, Texas and Ontario, Canada. Through its ApplianceSmart (www.ApplianceSmart.com) operation, ARCA (www.arcainc.com) is one of the nation’s leading retailers of special-buy household appliances, including such leading brands as Maytag, GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool. These special-buy appliances, which include close-outs, factory overruns and scratch-and-dent units, typically are not integrated into the manufacturer’s normal distribution channel. ApplianceSmart sells these virtually new appliances at a significant discount to full retail, offers a 100% money-back guarantee and provides warranties on parts and labor.

As of mid-October 2007, ApplianceSmart was operating 14 factory outlets: five in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market; three in the Columbus, Ohio, market; four in the Atlanta market; and two in San Antonio, Texas.

ARCA is also one of the nation’s largest recyclers of major household appliances for the energy conservation programs of electric utilities.
