Appliance Recycling Centers of America (ARCA) Announces Appointment of
Rachel L. Holmes to Vice President of Business Development and Environmental Affairs

April 28, 2008
Minneapolis, MN

Appliance Recycling Centers of America, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARCI) today announced that it has promoted Rachel L. Holmes to the newly created position of Vice President of Business Development and Environmental Affairs.

Holmes’ emphasis will be on business development, which will include strategic planning to identify and attract new clients to ARCA’s appliance recycling and replacement services. In this new role, she also directs ARCA’s environmental, industry and regulatory research and the company’s participation in related industry and government initiatives. She will continue to direct marketing and communications for ARCA’s appliance retirement and replacement services as well as the company’s ApplianceSmart factory outlets.

“The creation of this position demonstrates the strength of ARCA’s keen commitment to providing our clients and retail customers with the most environmentally responsible products and services available from the latest advances in the appliance management industry,” commented Edward R. (Jack) Cameron, President and CEO. “With her extensive understanding of our electric utility client base and company operations, Rachel is a champion of ARCA’s fundamental role in promoting environmental stewardship through conservation and recycling.”

Holmes has been with ARCA since 1991 in positions of increasing management responsibility in corporate planning, advertising and business development. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota.

About ARCA

ARCA is one of the nation’s largest recyclers of major household appliances for the energy conservation programs of electric utilities. Through its ApplianceSmart operation, ARCA is also one of the nation’s leading retailers of special-buy household appliances, primarily those manufactured by Maytag, GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool. These special-buy appliances, which include close-outs, factory overruns and scratch-and-dent units, typically are not integrated into manufacturers’ normal distribution channels. ApplianceSmart sells these virtually new appliances at a discount to full retail, offers a 100% money-back guarantee and provides warranties on parts and labor.

As of April 2008, ApplianceSmart was operating fifteen factory outlets: five in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market; four in the Columbus, Ohio, market; four in the Atlanta market; and two in San Antonio, Texas
